In 2018, I composed a spatialized piece for saxophone quartet, string quartet, two improvisers and video projection. The video is comprised of images of graffiti that I had photographed while on tour or simply in my everyday environment in Montreal. Hence, the title of this work: Cathédrale-Graffiti.

It is a graphic score that scrolls before the eyes of the performers on an iPad screen, which plays, in a certain way, the role of leader or guide, and which always remains invisible to the public. Musicians can therefore play in sync without even seeing each other.

I then adapted this same piece for all kinds of different situations and orchestrations, in formations ranging from eight to thirty musicians, and each time I gave the new version the name of the city of its creation followed, or preceded by, "Cathedral". Following Cathedral-Edmonton, Cathedral-Rockies, Cathédrale-Montréal, Cathédrale-Stockholm and Last Cathedral (Victoria), this is Queen’s Cathedral.

Each version, although realized by following the same process, has its own particularities. For this version, I relied upon the same tools: graphic score, scrolling images, improvisation and spatialization. However, I opted for much more control over the harmony than in prior versions.

I constructed this piece as a playground where, I hope, the musicians as well as the public will discover joyfulness. I hope you enjoy it.
