Journal n°6

For Suzanne Stock.

With Journal n°1 (2005) for recorder and video, w begin a series of solo pieces resembling the entries of a private diary. These are therefore personal notes and moments, transforming from visual moments to moments of listening. The most difficult part of this composition is being confronted with a single instrument, like an absolute confrontation with oneself. An element from outside of the music plays a role in every piece in the series: In Journal n°2 (Schneeland) for accordion, a text is added, in Journal n°3 (fuite) dance, and in n°4 (mirages) for harp, the preparation of the harp is added. No. 5 (expectation) for piano incorporates musical elements such as baroque trills and the resonances of the 3rd pedal. For n°6, which, as with Journal n°2 is for the accordion, the sounds of Journal n°2 are reprised, first on the instrument and then outside, either through
the voice or the body. In this way, the sounds attached to personal names (the letters of her son’s first name) desired by Susanne Stock attain a different quality of timbre. The instrument and the body merge in the action.
