Brice Gatinet is a French composer currently living in Montreal. Along his musical path he discovered jazz, improvisation, death metal and Chopin. His works reflects these very different musical influences, and is proof of an extremist tendency. These elements are at the heart of his writing and musical thought. As a result of his research, he developed the concept of ”paired music”, where the musical discourse is directed by opposites. His work bears the stamp of this approach in which technique, poetry and structure are intimately linked to create a personal dynamic close to bursting the foundations of a sound universe free from constraints.
He obtained his Bachelors in musicology at Grenoble University, a degree on Jazz and Musique Actuelle at the Chambery conservatory, and his Masters in Composition at Montreal University. He was awarded bursaries by the Rhône-Alpes region for abroad studies, the SPEDIDAM organization for emerging artists, an excellence prize given by Montreal university and the most prestigious scholarship to pursue his doctorate at McGill University under the direction of Phillippe Leroux.
He has been involved in administrative and leadership positions on many occasions. He was an administrative counsellor for Code D’Accés, he was in charge of their concerts for the CECO (Compositors Circle). He is currently president of MASC (Music Association of Composition of McGill University), and representative of Axis IV (Expanded Music Practice) at CIRMTT(Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology). He was a lecturer for the Analysis class at UDM during three consecutive years, as well as teaching assistant for Philippe Leroux for a DCS(Digital Composer Studio) course. He worked as technical assistant for the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and for the ensemble Punctum (Jonathan Harvey`s Bahkti, Tristan Murail’s En Moyenne et Extreme Raison, and Yann Maresz`s Sul Segno…). He did a student exchange between IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustic Musique in Paris) and CIRMTT; in order to work on developing software that assists in orchestration, named Orchids.
