FIERY ENCOUNTERS XIV

Tradition vs. innovation: between imitation and true creation

Round table

Description

"Good artists copy, great artists steal."
Picasso

This quote attributed to Picasso questions our relationship to tradition vs. creation.

In a context where imitation and pastiche are an integral part of a composer's training, what influence do your mentors, peers and history have on your work? Where do you draw the line between plagiarism and poor imitation, homage? Does genius in music consist in enriching tradition, in transcending it, or on the contrary in breaking away from it, in breaking with the past to truly create?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this round table discussion moderated by Cristian Gort as a preamble to the Montréal-Mexico concert.
